1.Taiwan's diplomatic policies are viable: Ma
President Ma Ying-jeou says that his diplomatic approach is still viable
despite an African ally's recent severing of ties with Taiwan.

Taiwan terminated diplomatic relations with The Gambia on Monday, after the
Gambian president surprised Taipei by announcing an end to 18 years of formal
ties three days earlier.

The loss of the ally was seen by some as a setback to Ma's "flexible"
diplomatic approach, which includes a tacit diplomatic truce with China under
which the two sides do not try to lure each other's allies through dollar
diplomacy.

Ma says that The Gambia has not switched recognition over to China, which he
says proves that his diplomatic policies over the past five years have been
viable

He also says available evidence indicates that China played no role in the
Gambia's decision.

2.Plans to resolve hostage situation in Philippines kept low-key
Taiwan has drawn up a plan to resolve a hostage situation in the southern
Philippines, where armed assailants are keeping a Taiwanese national
kidnapped last week.

Defense Minister Yan Ming says, "There is an integrated effort and everything
has been properly planned for"

He declined to give information, however, insisting on "keeping a low
profile" for the safety of Chang An-wei

Taiwan has been working with the Malaysian and the Philippine authorities to
secure Chang's safe return since her kidnapping last Friday, which left her
husband dead.
